Series background & context
Jason Trapp is a former CIA operative known by the codename Hangman. Jack Slater's thriller series begins with a man who has been betrayed, officially declared dead, and stripped of the life he knew. He wants to find those responsible, but the search does not remain a private matter. Threats to his country draw him back into action, placing personal vengeance beside the work he once performed in secret.
Dark State, originally published as Deep State, opens amid coordinated terrorist attacks across the United States. Trapp discovers connections between the national emergency and the betrayal that nearly killed him. The premise gives him two reasons to act: the people behind his own losses must be found, and civilians are still in danger. His official status as a dead man complicates his relationship with the institutions that trained and employed him.
Leaving the agency has not freed him from its unfinished business.
The later novels take that continuing protagonist into different international crises. False Flag moves through locations including Hong Kong, Macau, Guam, and North Korea, with maritime operations adding another dimension to its espionage plot. The series uses changes of setting to expand the dangers around Trapp rather than making every investigation return to the same city. Travel, covert work, and violent confrontation form the practical conditions of a life that repeatedly resists becoming ordinary.
In Flash Point, Trapp is recovering in Tuscany with Eliza Ikeda when events involving a Russian intelligence asset threaten their chance of peace. The destruction of a passenger aircraft raises questions about what the dead man knew and why someone wanted him silenced. This setup joins an international conspiracy to a personal connection from Trapp's past. Eliza also gives the continuing story a relationship beyond his enemies and former employers, making the possibility of a different life part of what danger interrupts.
Depth Charge opens further routes into the conflict, including violence aboard a recovery ship in the North Pacific and a clandestine meeting in Iraq. Across the books, the plots place individual operations inside wider political threats. Trapp's skills may help him survive immediate attacks, but force alone cannot explain who is arranging them or what larger purpose they serve. The suspense comes from uncovering those connections while the danger is still unfolding, with action scenes and intelligence work feeding the same pursuit.
Beginning with Dark State introduces the betrayal and the circumstances behind Trapp's return. False Flag and Flash Point continue his story before Depth Charge and the later missions. The tone is an action thriller with espionage, assassination, and conspiracies at its centre. Its recurring thread is a covert operative whose desire for answers keeps intersecting with threats beyond himself, even when he tries to step away from the work.
