Author bio

KL Slater is the pen name of Nottinghamshire writer Kim Slater, known for psychological crime novels that turn everyday family life into something unsettling. Her thrillers have sold millions of copies worldwide and are set in streets, estates and villages that feel recognisably British. Readers come to her books for domestic suspense, complicated relationships and twists that keep coming until the final pages.

For a long time, she wrote in the gaps around work and family, sending manuscripts to agents and collecting rejection letters. Turning forty became the moment she decided to double down instead of walking away. She enrolled at Nottingham Trent University, first for a degree in English and Creative Writing and then for a master’s, studying as a mature student alongside younger classmates.

Those years of study, juggled with a full‑time job, gave her a toolkit as well as confidence. She learned to revise hard, listen to feedback and treat writing as a profession. Before she even graduated from her MA she had several offers of literary representation and her first publishing contract, a shift that felt like the end of a very long apprenticeship.

Her dissertation project grew into Safe With Me, the debut psychological thriller that introduced many readers to her unsettling narrators and Midlands settings. That book was followed by titles such as Blink, Liar, The Mistake, The Visitor and Finding Grace, each circling themes of memory, guilt and the secrets that hide inside ordinary houses. She often takes an apparently average woman—an exhausted mother, a loyal grandmother, a quiet neighbour—and watches what happens when pressure and paranoia close in.

Alongside the adult novels, Slater writes for younger readers under the name Kim Slater. Her first young adult book, Smart, about a boy investigating the death of a homeless man on the canal, picked up a string of regional prizes and major shortlistings. Later novels including A Seven-Letter Word, 928 Miles from Home and The Boy Who Lied tackle issues like bullying, poverty, prejudice and stammering, all wrapped inside page‑turning mysteries.

Across both strands of her work, certain fingerprints repeat. The stories are rooted in Nottinghamshire, from rough city estates to neat commuter streets. There is usually a mystery at the heart of things, but the real pull comes from watching relationships strain and shift under pressure: sisters who no longer trust each other, neighbours peering through net curtains, parents trying and failing to shield their children from the past.

Slater now writes full‑time from a small village in Nottinghamshire, where she lives with her husband, Mac, and their blended family of grown‑up children. Her days are split between drafting new books, editing, and visiting schools, libraries and festivals to talk about reading, resilience and the long road from slush pile to bestseller lists.

Across both names, her work offers tense, very human stories about the trouble that can lurk behind familiar doors.
