The Translator

by Dustin Stevens

2021

The first Translator novel turns ordinary language into something dangerous. Small details, hidden meaning, and what people choose to say drive the suspense.

2

The Confession

by Dustin Stevens

2022

A parent asks for help proving a son's confession was false. The investigation that follows is built on words, pressure, and the damage a lie can do.

Series background & context

The Translator series looks built around one of the most interesting thriller ideas in Stevens's catalog, that words themselves can be the battleground. Statements, meanings, confessions, omissions, and what people choose to hear all seem central to the line, starting with The Translator and carrying into The Confession.

That makes this series feel a little different right away.

Where some Stevens books lean hardest on pursuit or physical survival, Translator seems to lean into interpretation and proof. Somebody says something. Somebody signs something. Somebody confesses. The obvious reading is not the true one. That is a strong suspense engine because it puts pressure on evidence, motive, and trust at the same time.

The second book gives the cleanest example. In The Confession, a parent wants someone to prove that a son's confession was false. That kind of setup immediately opens the door to legal, psychological, and moral tension. Was the statement coerced, misunderstood, manipulated, or strategically given? However the books answer those questions, the series is clearly interested in how language can trap people just as effectively as violence can.

If you want Dustin Stevens doing something slightly more cerebral without giving up suspense, Translator is a smart choice. Expect investigations shaped by testimony and hidden meaning, with stakes that can still turn dangerous very quickly when the truth threatens the wrong people.
