Author bio
Dustin Stevens grew up in the Midwest, in farm country, and he has said that he still thinks of that landscape, along with West Tennessee, as home. That mix shows up all through his work. His books often carry a small-town memory, a Southern streak, and a feel for people who know hard work, loyalty, and trouble when they see it.
He did not stay in one place for long.
After leaving the Midwest, Stevens went to college in New England, then to graduate school in the Rockies. He has also said that he lived in more than a dozen cities along the way, from Washington, D.C., to Honolulu. He studied at Harvard University and the Montana School of Law, and that mix of legal training, travel, and constant observation feeds directly into his fiction.
A lot of readers first meet him through the Reed and Billie novels, starting with The Boat Man. Those books pair Detective Reed Mattox with his K-9 partner Billie and blend police work, fast-moving cases, and a strong emotional center. The Boat Man won the 2016 Next Generation Indie Book Award for e-book fiction, and it is still one of the clearest entry points into his work.
If you come to Stevens for action, Cold Fire is another strong place to begin. That book introduced Hawk Tate, a former DEA agent turned Montana guide, and it set the tone for one of his best-known thriller series. Readers who like outdoor settings, old grudges, and danger that feels close at hand tend to find a lot to like there. The Ham books hit a similar nerve, but with an even harder edge and a fierce female lead.
He also writes beyond straight suspense. The Zoo Crew books lean more toward community mystery and legal tension, while titles like Quarterback, Be My Eyes, Ohana, and Scars and Stars show his interest in sports, family, grief, memory, and the way ordinary lives can turn on one bad moment. There is range in the bibliography, but the connecting thread is easy to spot: Stevens likes capable people under pressure.
That carries over into his screenwriting too.
Alongside his novels, Stevens is an award-winning screenwriter. He has placed or been recognized in competitions connected to Harvardwood, Emerging Screenwriters, the Nashville International Film Festival, the Honolulu Film Awards, and the Big Bear Lake International Film Festival. He is also a member of Mystery Writers of America and International Thriller Writers.
He has also published thrillers under the name T.R. Kohler, using that line for more suspense work and additional series. It makes sense when you look at how much he writes. Even across different names and subgenres, his books tend to move quickly, stay close to character, and keep one foot planted in the real world.
These days he lives in Honolulu. He has written about loving football, sweet tea, travel, new food, and the kinds of small details that most people miss. That curiosity matters. It is one of the reasons his books, whether they are about detectives, former agents, lawyers, or dreamers, usually feel lived in from the first page.
