Tracey Lange Books in Order

Tracey Lange was born in the Bronx and raised in Manhattan, and a lot of her fiction still carries that New York energy: close family ties, old grievances, loud love, and the sense that the past is never quite finished. She also grew up in a big Irish Catholic family, with a father from Northern Ireland and relatives spread across New York, Westchester, Long Island, Ireland, and beyond.

Family was never just background in her life.

Lange headed west for college and earned a degree in psychology from the University of New Mexico. After that, she and her husband spent years working in mental health and behavioral healthcare, eventually owning and operating a company for about fifteen years. That experience put her close to people under real strain, and you can feel it in her novels, which pay careful attention to how families cope, fail each other, and try again.

Writing fiction came later. After she and her husband sold their company and moved to Bend, Oregon, she decided to take it seriously, enrolled in Stanford's online novel writing program, and worked with a writing group that became a big part of her process.

It was a second career, but not a small one.

Her debut novel, We Are the Brennans, arrived in 2021 and became a New York Times bestseller. It follows Sunday Brennan as she returns to her Irish Catholic family in New York after a bad accident, only to run straight back into the secrets she left behind. Readers who click with Lange usually respond to the same things here: layered siblings, complicated parents, shame and loyalty tangled together, and the steady feeling that people can still choose honesty even after a mess.

She followed that with The Connellys of County Down, about Tara Connelly coming home after prison to a family already stretched to the limit. Then came What Happened to the McCrays?, which turns to a broken marriage, a stroke, and a small northern New York town where everybody knows the old story, or thinks they do. Across these books, Lange keeps returning to people who are bound together in ordinary and life-changing ways: brothers and sisters, exes, parents, children, neighbors, old family friends.

Her settings shift from suburbs near New York City to tighter small-town worlds, but the draw is similar. She likes communities where people remember everything, where help and judgment often arrive together, and where love can look messy on the page because it is messy in real life.

She writes about guilt, secrecy, loyalty, second chances, and the long half-life of family stories.

Lange still lives in Bend with her husband, their two sons, and the family's German shepherd. For someone who came to novels after another full career, she writes with a lot of patience about reinvention, which feels fitting. Her characters rarely get easy fixes, but they do get the chance to face one another honestly, and that may be the most Tracey Lange thing about them.
