Tony Rome Books in Order

Tony Rome is the Miami private investigator created by Marvin H. Albert under the pen name Anthony Rome. A former police lieutenant, Tony has left official law enforcement behind, but he still knows the city, its criminals, and the ways wealthy people try to make problems disappear.

He is a gambler, a wisecracker, and a man who gets hit a lot without staying down.

The Tony Rome novels are rooted in Miami's heat, waterfront glamour, bars, hotels, private homes, and underworld connections. The city matters because it puts very different people in close quarters: rich families, hustlers, crooked professionals, struggling clients, and mob figures. Tony moves between those worlds without fully belonging to any of them.

The first book, Miami Mayhem, sends him into a case involving a prosperous family with ugly secrets. In Lady in Cement, Tony finds a woman's body encased in cement while diving, then gets drawn into a deadly tangle of false identities and organized crime. My Kind of Game becomes personal when a mentor from Tony's past is badly beaten while investigating trouble in a small town.

Albert's approach is fast and hard-boiled, but Tony is not just a joke machine with a gun. He can be cynical about clients and crooks, yet he has a stubborn sense of responsibility toward people who have been used or hurt. The novels give him plenty of chances to follow a clue too far, anger the wrong people, and discover that the official story is built to protect someone powerful.

Miami is sunny, but these books are noir at heart. Money, sex, violence, and status shape the cases, and Tony has to sort through all of them while keeping one step ahead of police, gangsters, and clients who are not telling him the truth.

The series has only three novels, so publication order is the best reading order: Miami Mayhem, Lady in Cement, then My Kind of Game. Each can stand on its own, but reading straight through lets Tony's world and his methods come into clearer focus.

The first two novels later became films starring Frank Sinatra. The books, however, are the place to find Albert's original version of Tony: sharper around the edges, more rooted in the paperback private-eye tradition, and always looking for the angle nobody else wants to see.
