Author bio

Marvin H. Albert was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on January 22, 1924. He grew up there, then spent World War II in the U.S. Merchant Marine as a radio officer. That time at sea would later fit naturally into a career full of movement, danger, tough choices, and characters far from home.

After the war, Albert returned to Philadelphia and directed a children's theater troupe. In 1950 he moved to New York, where he worked as an editor and writer for Quick and Look magazines.

His early novel The Law and Jake Wade, a 1956 western, gave him the opening he needed to become a full-time novelist. It was adapted for film two years later. Albert would keep one foot in publishing and another in movies for much of his career, writing screenplays and novelizations as well as original fiction.

He was a working writer in the fullest sense.

Albert wrote westerns, hard-boiled mysteries, international thrillers, historical nonfiction, and comic movie tie-ins. He also used several pen names, including Al Conroy, Albert Conroy, Nick Quarry, Anthony Rome, Ian MacAlister, and Mike Barone. The different names let him move easily between shelves, from lean private-eye stories to frontier gunfights and globe-hopping adventures.

Under the name Anthony Rome, he created Tony Rome, a former Miami police lieutenant turned private investigator. The three Rome novels, Miami Mayhem, Lady in Cement, and My Kind of Game, are quick, dryly funny crime stories with a bruised but decent hero. The first two became Frank Sinatra films, helping bring Albert's work to an even wider audience.

His westerns stayed important, too. Apache Rising became the film Duel at Diablo, while The Man in Black, one of the Clayburn novels, was adapted as Rough Night in Jericho. Albert's western heroes are often gamblers, scouts, or men with a hard past, pushed into fights over land, money, loyalty, or revenge.

In the 1970s, Albert turned toward international suspense. The Gargoyle Conspiracy follows a terrorist plot across Europe and was nominated for an Edgar Award. Books such as Driscoll's Diamonds, Strike Force 7, and Operation Lila show his interest in mercenaries, wartime missions, stolen fortunes, and high-risk escapes.

Then came Pete Sawyer, also known by his French name, Pierre-Ange, or Stone Angel. Based on the French Riviera, Sawyer is a French-American private investigator with a taste for good food, good wine, and carrying a gun when a case turns ugly. Beginning with The Dark Goddess and continuing through novels such as Stone Angel, Back in the Real World, and The Riviera Contract, the series mixes private-eye work with travel, political danger, and Riviera glamour.

Albert moved to southern France in 1976 and continued writing from there. The setting was more than scenery. France, Monaco, Paris, and the Mediterranean became places where his later characters could run into old money, new criminals, international schemes, and trouble that crossed borders.

He died in Menton, France, on March 25, 1996. His long body of work remains a lively map of paperback-era storytelling, full of detectives, drifters, crooks, soldiers, and people who discover that an apparently simple job is rarely simple for long.
