Tom Savage Books in Order

Tom Savage writes suspense stories in which a familiar life can turn dangerous with one phone call, one unexpected visitor, or one secret from the past. Raised in St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, he later made New York City his home. Both places have left their mark on his fiction.

Before readers knew him through his novels, Savage spent many years working at Murder Ink, a New York bookstore devoted to mystery and crime fiction. The job kept him close to the genre’s readers, writers, and endless supply of sinister ideas. It also gave him a working view of the kind of story people want to press into someone else’s hands.

His first novel, Precipice, arrived in 1994. Set on St. Thomas, it begins with a wealthy family, a seemingly ideal new employee, and a house perched above the sea. Hidden identities, old damage, and mounting danger give it the shape of a classic domestic thriller.

The view is lovely. The situation is not.

In Valentine, Savage moved the danger to wintry New York and put bestselling mystery writer Jillian Talbot at the center of a stalking campaign tied to a college prank. The novel was later adapted into a 2001 film, bringing its Valentine’s Day menace and revenge-driven plot to a wider audience.

He continued to build standalone stories around ordinary people pulled toward hidden histories. The Inheritance sends an adopted young woman to an unexpected Connecticut fortune and an uneasy family estate. Scavenger follows a crime novelist whose research into an unsolved family-murder case becomes horribly personal.

A Penny for the Hangman returns to St. Thomas, this time with a journalist chasing the truth behind an infamous decades-old crime. Its story uses records, reports, and personal documents alongside direct action, letting the past keep interrupting the present.

Later, Savage created Nora Baron, a Long Island drama teacher and mother whose acting skills turn out to be unusually useful in the intelligence world. Beginning with Mrs. John Doe, the series takes Nora from London and France to Venice, Paris, the Alps, and the Caribbean as she accepts dangerous roles for the CIA.

She is never allowed to mistake a good cover for safety.

The Nora books are fast-moving, but they also make room for a capable woman navigating marriage, family, and fear while learning what she can do under pressure. The Woman Who Knew Too Much, The Spy Who Never Was, and The Devil and the Deep Blue Spy build on that idea with covers, defectors, blackmail, and international threats.

Savage has also written short fiction for Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine and Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, as well as mystery anthologies. His books have been published in fifteen countries. He has also been involved with Mystery Writers of America, including service on its board, and his career remains closely tied to the readers and writers who keep the mystery field busy.
