by Jack Gatland

Series background & context

Tom Marlowe starts the series in the worst position a spy can be in, officially he doesn’t exist. He’s an MI5 “Section D” operative who’s been burned, his clearances wiped and his protection from friendly agencies pulled, which means everyone from professionals to freelancers can take a shot at him.

That setup gives the books their restless pace. Marlowe is always moving, always improvising, and usually working without the safety net that comes with a badge or a mandate. When he does accept help, it’s personal rather than official, a retired CIA friend who can offer a sofa and a lead, or a partner who can crack data and spot patterns faster than Marlowe can run them down in person.

The supporting cast stays tight by thriller standards, but it matters. You’ll see allies who understand what it costs to live off the books, and enemies who play a longer game, including professional hunters like St John Steele and shadowy operators tied to a conspiracy that keeps resurfacing as Marlowe digs.

Marlowe never gets a quiet day.

Cases often kick off with something that feels like an isolated hit, a retired agent murdered, a leaked file, a target who shouldn’t even be on anyone’s radar, and then widen into a larger pattern. Cold War history, modern surveillance, and the politics of Whitehall show up alongside shootouts, tailing jobs, and rushed decisions made in unfamiliar cities. The series moves easily between London and the US, with stops that can swing from New York to Las Vegas, Boston, or Edinburgh, depending on where the danger is gathering.

Running through the action is a bigger question, who set Marlowe up, and what kind of network has the reach to turn him into a ghost overnight? As he digs, he keeps hitting the same uncomfortable problem: the enemy isn’t always foreign, and the people giving orders don’t always want the truth uncovered. That’s where the tension lives, between loyalty to the job and loyalty to the people who get hurt when institutions protect themselves.

Even with ongoing threads, each book is built around a clear mission and a ticking-clock threat, so you get a satisfying arc every time. If you’re starting fresh, Sleeping Soldiers is the clean entry point, and it sets the tone for everything that follows: high stakes, sharp reversals, and a lead character who survives on nerve as much as training.
