Author bio
Jack Gatland is the crime and thriller pen name of British writer Tony Lee, a storyteller who spent years in comics, audio, and screen before turning that same momentum into page‑turning novels.
He was born in Hayes in West London in 1970, and he grew up with a steady diet of libraries, pop culture, and the kind of city-life detail that later shows up in his books, street corners, public buildings, and people from very different worlds forced into the same room.
Long before the Gatland name appeared on a cover, Lee built a career writing professionally across formats. He’s worked with major publishers in the UK and the US, and he’s written stories set in well-known franchises, including work tied to properties like Doctor Who and X-Men. He’s also written for audio projects and scripts, which shows up in his novels as sharp scene-setting and dialogue that tends to get to the point.
He’s had work hit bestseller lists in the comics world.
Then he decided to write the kind of novels he loved reading.
In 2020 he launched the Jack Gatland byline with Letter From The Dead, introducing Detective Inspector Declan Walsh and the City of London Police unit nicknamed the Last Chance Saloon. The setup is made for long-running crime fiction, a driven detective with a reputation, a team of capable misfits, and cases that keep colliding with power, money, and the stories people tell to protect their careers. The investigations can be read one at a time, but they also build an ongoing sense of consequence.
From there, the output branched fast. Gatland’s Tom Marlowe books follow a burned MI5 agent pushed off the map, taking dangerous jobs in the US and back home while trying to stay alive long enough to learn who betrayed him. The Ellie Reckless thrillers pivot to the criminal underworld, with an ex-DCI taking work from people who can’t go to the police, and paying for every favour with another problem. He’s also created the drifter‑hero Liam Harper, and the Carlyle and Silver mysteries, which lean lighter without giving up the twists.
If you like mysteries that move, his books tend to start with a clean hook and then keep tightening the screws. A case that looks simple turns into a knot of motives, old grudges, and institutional pressure, and the solution usually comes with a cost. London is a recurring character too, not the tourist version, but the working city of airports, back offices, courts, clubs, and late-night streets.
He also writes outside straight police procedurals. The Lionheart Curse leans into history and treasure-hunt puzzle solving, while The Boardroom traps a handful of powerful people in a single high-stakes situation and watches what they’ll do when the clock runs down.
Lee lives in Kent with his wife, Tracy. Under the Jack Gatland name he’s built a set of series that share a common promise, short chapters, clear stakes, and protagonists who keep pushing forward even when the easy choice would be to walk away.
