Author bio

Tom Fowler grew up in Baltimore, and that city still runs through his work. He now lives in the Maryland suburbs near Washington, D.C., but Baltimore remains his emotional home turf. By day he works in computer security, which helps explain why his books often feel comfortable around hackers, systems, and the ways ordinary people get tangled up in digital trouble.

Baltimore never really leaves the page.

He started early. When he was seven or eight, he would spend the day out riding bikes with friends, then come home and write very short stories. One of them was a murder mystery where nobody actually died. Everyone recovered nicely in the hospital. The important part, though, is that he caught the writing bug and never really shook it.

That mix of mischief and discipline shows up all over his fiction. Fowler writes thrillers and mysteries with movement in them. People get chased. Plans go sideways. Smart mouths say the wrong thing at the wrong time. But beneath the action, his books are usually about people trying to do one decent thing in a messy world.

His best-known series starts with The Reluctant Detective, which introduces C.T. Ferguson, a wealthy hacker turned Baltimore private investigator with a sharp tongue and a habit of stumbling into bigger trouble than he expects. Books like The Unknown Devil, Inside Cut, and Night Comes Down build on that setup, mixing classic private-eye cases with cybercrime, corruption, and city politics. Readers who like this series tend to enjoy C.T.'s snark, the Baltimore setting, and the way the stories blend tech with street-level danger.

Fowler took a different route with The Mechanic, the first John Tyler thriller. Tyler is a retired Green Beret who would rather work on classic cars and be a better father to his daughter than relive his old life. Of course, that old life keeps catching up with him. In books like White Lines and Lost Highway, Fowler leans harder into action, road mileage, and the quiet pull of a man who wants peace but cannot ignore people in trouble.

He likes flawed heroes.

Whether he is writing about a hacker turned detective or a veteran mechanic pulled back into violence, Fowler keeps coming back to similar things: loyalty, guilt, found family, the cost of doing the right thing, and the way a city or community shapes the people inside it. He also has a feel for recurring supporting characters, so his series grow a little wider and warmer as they go. You get the case of the week, but you also get the sense that these people have lives waiting off the page.

Outside the books, the details are refreshingly ordinary. Fowler has said he is a serious fan of Baltimore sports teams, and when he is not working or writing he enjoys time with family, reading, and movies. That everyday steadiness fits the books. Even when they get big and violent, they stay grounded in work, family, money, neighborhoods, and the plain fact that trouble usually interrupts someone's normal Tuesday.

If you are new to his work, the entry points are easy. Start with The Reluctant Detective if you want modern PI fiction with hacker brains and Baltimore attitude. Start with The Mechanic if you want a harder-driving action series with classic cars and a father-daughter core. Either way, you are getting the version of Tom Fowler readers know best: sharp, fast-moving, and more interested in people than posturing.
