Author bio
Tom Deady grew up in Malden, Massachusetts, not far from Salem, a place whose history and spooky reputation naturally fit the kind of stories he would later write. His fiction often returns to New England towns where old secrets, troubled families, and something unnatural beneath the surface refuse to stay buried.
His route to publication was not a straight line. Deady studied electronics engineering and operations management, then spent years working in the high-tech and IT world while holding onto the goal of becoming a writer.
The urge to tell scary stories started young.
As a teenager, after reading 'Salem's Lot, he wrote a vampire story for school. His teacher liked it enough to suggest the school magazine, but the shy young writer declined. He has said that fragment of an early idea eventually found its way into Eternal Darkness.
In the mid-1990s, Deady began taking his writing more seriously, including through a correspondence course. He kept writing around work and family life. After finishing Haven, he returned to school and earned a master's degree in English and Creative Writing from Southern New Hampshire University.
Then Haven changed things.
Set in a Massachusetts town haunted by child murders and a suspected monster, Haven became Deady's first novel and won the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a First Novel. It established several things readers can expect from him: a close-knit group of people under pressure, a vivid small-town setting, and horror that comes from both human cruelty and the genuinely strange.
His later work moves through different corners of the genre without losing that interest in character and place. Eternal Darkness follows young friends in 1979 Bristol, Massachusetts, as a newcomer and an old house become tied to a growing threat. Weekend Getaway traps a damaged marriage in a cabin nightmare. In Of Men and Monsters, a boy's new sea-monkey-style pet grows alongside the danger posed by his abusive father.
Deady also writes shorter horror. Coleridge mixes grief, an old house, and an unwelcome visitor searching for a dangerous secret. Tales From Circadia gathers fifteen stories that range from supernatural dread to darkly personal shocks. With the Hopedale Mystery books, beginning with The Witch of Hopedale, he shifts toward younger protagonists, pairing friendship and local history with eerie investigations.
Small towns matter in these books. So do lonely houses, childhood fears, family wounds, and the uneasy feeling that the past has been waiting for someone to come back.
Deady lives in Massachusetts and has described himself as a night owl, often writing after the rest of the household has gone to bed. Outside fiction, he is a committed Red Sox fan and has spent years blogging about the team. He is also a member of the Horror Writers Association and the New England Horror Writers.
