Tom Combs Books in Order

Tom Combs is a Minneapolis native who grew up in Minnesota with a serious reading habit and a taste for suspense. He has said he was the kind of kid who would cross a frozen lake in bitter weather just to get to the library and trade in one stack of books for the next.

That love of story came early, but writing was not his first career. He read widely, suspense, mysteries, historical fiction, science fiction, adventure, and later studied biochemistry at the University of Minnesota. Before medicine took over, he also worked as a research assistant in pharmacology and spent time as a technical writer, which helps explain the practical, clear-eyed feel of his fiction.

He also worked his way through school in less glamorous jobs, including work with chainsaws, jackhammers, and heavy machinery. Then came medical school, an internship at Hennepin County Medical Center, and emergency medicine residency training at the University of Cincinnati. He served as a helicopter rescue flight physician there and went on to spend more than two decades in busy level one trauma hospitals. The tools changed, but the pace and pressure only increased.

Emergency medicine became his world.

Those years gave Combs the material his novels still draw on: exhausted teams, split-second decisions, frightened families, and the strange mix of terror, tenderness, and dark humor that lives inside an ER. His stories are full of doctors, nurses, paramedics, police, researchers, and ordinary people thrown into impossible situations. What stands out is that he writes the whole system, not just the person at the center of the room.

The turn toward fiction came after a brain aneurysm forced him out of the ER. He has spoken candidly about how disorienting recovery was, including a stretch when he could read but not retain what he had read. About a year and a half later, he started taking classes at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis. One early scene became the seed of Drake Cody, the emergency physician at the heart of his thrillers. Combs kept at it, took more than 30 courses, conferences, and seminars, and spent over five years shaping Nerve Damage before it became his debut.

That first novel set the pattern readers now know: authentic medical action, pressure from the worlds of business and law, and a protagonist whose professional life can blow up his home life in a single shift. Hard To Breathe raises the stakes when Drake Cody reports suspected abuse and ends up facing powerful enemies. Wrongful Deaths moves into the opioid crisis and suspicious hospital deaths. Insurrection turns an emergency room into the center of a domestic terror attack. Across the books, Combs returns to recurring questions about greed, responsibility, public systems under strain, and what it costs to do the right thing when every choice hurts someone.

Even at top speed, the books stay human.

Outside fiction, Combs's long medical career also brought recognition from his peers, including repeated Top Doctors honors in Minneapolis and St. Paul, and he has been listed as a Minnesota Book Award finalist. He has been writing fiction full-time since 2008. Today he lives in Minnesota with his artist wife, close to family, including his children and grandsons, and he has described writing from home in the state he never really left. These days the instruments are different, keyboard instead of stethoscope, but the instinct feels familiar: pay attention, stay calm, and keep moving when the stakes are high.
