Tom Bouman Books in Order

Tom Bouman grew up on a dirt road in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, a rural corner of the state that would later shape the landscape of his fiction. His novels return to wooded hills, small towns, old family ties, and the pressure that arrives when outside change reaches a close-knit place.

Writing was part of the plan early on. Bouman studied Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins University, then earned an MFA in fiction from Columbia University. But like plenty of writers, he took a practical route after school and went to work in New York publishing.

For more than a decade, he worked first in sales and later as an editor. He handled fiction as well as history, current affairs, and memoir, learning how books are put together from the inside. The job kept him close to stories, even when his own fiction had to wait.

Crime novels were the books he most wanted to write. He had been trying without much progress until one morning he woke with the voice of a character, Officer Henry Farrell, in his head. That small jolt gave him a way into a story, and eventually into Dry Bones in the Valley.

That voice led somewhere.

Published in 2014, Dry Bones in the Valley introduced Farrell, a rural Pennsylvania police officer investigating a body found on a reclusive man’s property. The novel places its mystery against gas drilling, drug crime, and long-running local grudges. It won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Mystery/Thriller and the Edgar Award for Best First Novel.

Bouman continued Farrell’s story in Fateful Mornings and The Bramble and the Rose. Across the three books, the mysteries matter, but so do the people caught in them: neighbors who know too much, families carrying old losses, and a patient, outdoors-minded officer trying to do right by a community that can be both protective and hard to read.

The setting is never just scenery. Bouman draws on the rural Pennsylvania he knew growing up, showing how a place can hold beauty, isolation, humor, suspicion, and real economic strain all at once. Farrell’s cases move through woods, back roads, struggling homes, and towns where almost everyone has a history with someone else.

Bouman also took a turn that runs in his family. When he and his wife were preparing to raise their family outside New York City, he enrolled at Penn State Dickinson Law at age 35. He earned his law degree in 2017, the same year he began practicing law in New York.

He now works as a partner at a Binghamton law firm, with a practice that includes civil litigation and trusts and estates work. He lives in upstate New York with his wife and daughters, and still makes room for the outdoors, biking, sailing, music, and writing.

His career has taken a few turns, but the thread is clear: a close attention to people, the places that make them, and the secrets they keep.
