Tollins: Explosive Tales for Children
by Conn Iggulden
2009
These linked stories introduce Tollins—tiny winged creatures who insist they are nothing like fairies—and Sparkler, the inventive Tollin who must save his people from being packed into fireworks, botched executions and other spectacular disasters.
Series background & context
The Tollins books offer a lighter side of Conn Iggulden’s writing, aimed at children but laced with the same love of mischief and invention. Tollins are tiny winged creatures who emphatically are not fairies— they are proud of being tough as bricks, quick to take offence and surprisingly combustible.
In Tollins: Explosive Tales for Children, readers meet Sparkler, a curious young Tollin whose experiments with science and human technology keep blowing holes in tradition. When a fireworks factory sets up near the Tollin village of Chorleywood, the humans discover that Tollin dust burns beautifully. Sparkler has to outthink both greedy factory owners and his own suspicious elders to keep his friends from ending up as ingredients in rockets and Catherine wheels.
The stories that follow play with classic adventure shapes—executions gone wrong, medical miracles gone sideways, dark Tollins from distant valleys—while keeping the tone wry and gently anarchic. The humour leans into wordplay, daft inventions and the idea that adults, whether human or Tollin, often have less sense than the children they are trying to control.
Tollins 2: Dynamite Tales returns to Chorleywood with three more episodes. Sparkler’s attempt to stage a version of a human play leads to dragonfly racing, bruised egos and a lot of shouting. A raid by the gloomy Dark Tollins of Dorset introduces radio technology and a house cat with more personality than some villains. A final mission of mercy sends Tollins into real danger to save their rivals from human demolition plans, powered mainly by hot tea, toast and stubborn bravery.
Across both books you can expect slapstick mishaps, mock-serious footnotes and illustrations that lean into the absurdity of tiny people arguing over big ideas. Underneath the jokes there’s a gentle respect for curiosity, problem-solving and standing up for your friends—even if they are only three inches tall and covered in soot.
