Time Stoppers Books in Order

The Time Stoppers books are middle grade fantasy adventures built around one of Carrie Jones's favorite ideas, that the strange world is right next to the ordinary one, and kids are often the first people brave enough to step into it. The series begins with Annie Nobody, a foster kid who has already been passed from home to home so many times that even her name sounds like an insult. On day one with yet another family, things go spectacularly wrong and then much, much weirder.

Instead of getting swallowed by that bad start, Annie gets swept into Aurora, a hidden magical town on the coast of Maine. Aurora is the kind of place that makes fantasy readers happy right away. It is packed with enchanted beings, odd rules, danger, humor, and the sense that anything might come through the woods if you wait long enough. But Jones also makes it feel like a real community, not just a backdrop. It is full of creatures and people who are trying to protect a home that outsiders either do not understand or actively want to destroy.

Annie does not take that journey alone. One of the pleasures of the series is the found family she builds there. Jamie Hephastion Alexander, who may or may not be turning into a troll, becomes her closest friend. Eva the dwarf and Bloom the last elf round out the central group, and together they have exactly the right mix of loyalty, bickering, courage, and panic. Jones writes them like kids, not tiny adults, which helps when the stakes get larger.

Because the stakes do get larger. Annie learns that she is a Time Stopper, one of the last humans able to control time and protect the enchanted. That role pushes the series from hidden-town fantasy into bigger quest territory. The villain Raiff wants Aurora's magic, and the later books expand into kidnappings, secret histories, magical weapons, prophecies, dragons, and the dangerous Badlands. The plot keeps widening, but the emotional core stays the same. Annie is still a girl who has spent most of her life wondering whether she belongs anywhere.

Belonging is the real magic here.

The tone is playful without being flimsy. There are jokes, odd creatures, and delightfully bizarre details, but there is also real menace. Jones balances whimsy with urgency well, which makes the books work for readers who want sparkle and suspense at the same time. If you like hidden worlds, underdog heroes, and fantasy quests that care just as much about friendship as they do about saving the day, Time Stoppers is a good place to start.

At its heart, the series is about a kid who has been told she is nobody, only to learn that who she is matters more than anyone guessed.
