Need Books in Order

The Need series is the set of books most readers probably connect with Carrie Jones first, and it is easy to see why. The opening is simple and strong. Zara White is grieving the death of her stepfather, her mother ships her off to live with her grandmother in Maine, and Zara keeps herself steady by collecting phobias. That detail tells you a lot about the books right away. They are interested in fear, but also in the small strange ways people survive it.

Once Zara gets to Maine, things go from sad to unsettling to fully supernatural. The man who keeps showing up near her is not just a creepy stalker. He is a pixie, and not a cute fairy sort of pixie either. Jones takes the small-town winter setting and loads it with menace. Snow, woods, icy roads, and quiet neighborhoods all become part of the mood. Maine is not just a backdrop here. It is a cold, close place where strange things can move around almost unnoticed.

That would already be enough for a fun YA paranormal series, but Jones gives Zara a good supporting cast too. Nick brings the romance and some of the danger. Her grandmother, her friends, and the other creatures around town keep widening the story. The result is a blend of mystery, supernatural suspense, and teen drama that moves quickly without losing Zara's emotional point of view.

As the books go on, the world gets bigger. Pixie politics deepen. New kings arrive. Zara's own identity becomes more complicated. The series starts with a girl being hunted and grows into a story about power, loyalty, love, and what it means to belong to more than one world at once. By the later books, Jones is also playing with Norse mythology, Valhalla, and the tension between human feeling and supernatural duty. That gives the series a larger canvas while still keeping Zara at the center.

It is creepy in a very readable way.

One reason the books hold up for fans of the genre is that Zara never stops feeling like a teenager, even when the plot gets wild. She worries, misreads people, falls in love, gets scared, and keeps moving anyway. Jones also has a knack for balancing the darker stuff with humor and romantic pull. The result feels more intimate than epic, even when the stakes are huge.

If you like YA fantasy with winter atmosphere, messy feelings, supernatural danger, and a heroine who has to grow into a truth she never asked for, Need is still a strong place to start with Jones. These books know that monsters are frightening, but they also know that grief, loneliness, and wanting to be understood can be just as powerful. That mix is what gives the series its staying power.
