She loses time, shocks people she cares about, and becomes entangled in a murder mystery that seems to belong to two eras at once. New Orleans matters a lot to the book. Its layered past, spiritual traditions, and tight streets make the time slips feel almost plausible.

The second book, Spirit in the Fold, shifts to Renaissance Florence and follows Gabriela di Domenico, a gifted seamstress whose talent pushes against what women are allowed to be. Medici politics, religious pressure, art, clothing, and coded symbolism all become part of the puzzle. A woman in another century is feeling the same fracture, and the two lives cannot move forward until the pattern binding them is understood. That is a good example of what this series does well. Thornley is interested in history, but she is just as interested in identity, permission, and the cost of being told who you are allowed to become.

These are books about women under pressure, across very different worlds. Romy is doubted because what she is experiencing sounds impossible. Gabriela is threatened because her gifts do not fit the rules laid down around her. In both cases, the mystery is not just whodunit. It is also what happened to these souls, how the damage crossed time, and what it will take to stop repeating it.

There is a romantic streak here, and a spiritual one, but the tone is still suspenseful. Thornley likes chase scenes, high emotion, and historical settings with real texture. She also keeps returning to textiles and crafted objects as carriers of meaning, which fits this series especially well. Clothes, symbols, and handiwork are never just decoration. They hold clues, memory, and sometimes the only route out.

Time Shadows is a good pick if you want history with a pulse and a supernatural hook that actually changes the plot. These are not quiet time-slip novels. They are fast, emotional, and a little unnerving, built around the idea that the soul remembers more than the mind can safely manage.
