The second book, The Cosmati Connection, pushes the idea further by sending Geri back to medieval Italy to find Petrus and repair the first Cosmati pavements. That means the series is not only about reading history. It is about entering it, changing it, and surviving the unintended consequences. Even in a short summary, you can see Thornley's favorite concerns coming back: crafted surfaces hiding encoded meaning, old belief systems still exerting force, and women forced to do the real work while others posture.

Tone matters here. This is not grim fantasy. It is historical fantasy with paranormal energy, a mystery spine, and a lively sense of humor. The stakes can be huge, but the whole idea stays human-sized.
