Time Salvager

by Wesley Chu

2015

In a future where Earth is a poisoned ruin, chronman James Griffin-Mars raids doomed moments in history for resources that keep humanity alive. On a supposedly routine mission, he rescues scientist Elise Kim, breaking every rule and turning them into fugitives.

Series background & context

The Time Salvager series drops readers into a far future where Earth has been poisoned and mostly abandoned, and the remains of human civilization cling to life in scattered colonies throughout the solar system. The only way to keep those outposts functioning is to harvest resources from the past.

James Griffin-Mars is a chronman, a convicted criminal whose temperament and nerve make him suited to the most dangerous job imaginable. Under contract to a powerful corporate bureaucracy, he jumps to carefully selected points in history that are already doomed, stealing energy, equipment, and materials in the final minutes before disaster strikes.

Time travel here comes with strict laws. Chronmen are forbidden to alter recorded events or remove people from the past, both to avoid paradox and to keep the system stable. Years of seeing doomed timelines, leaving people to die, and enduring the physical strain of repeated jumps have left James exhausted and cynical.

On what is supposed to be his last big mission, James breaks the most important rule. In the middle of an ocean rig catastrophe he pulls scientist Elise Kim out of her era and brings her forward with him, convinced she can help solve the looming environmental collapse. That single act turns both of them into fugitives.

Much of Time Salvager follows James and Elise as they flee through the lethal ruins of Earth, trying to keep ahead of corporate security while building a fragile alliance with the Elfreth, a marginalized group of survivors who still call the planet home. Along the way they cross paths with Grace Priestly, the brilliant and eccentric inventor of time travel herself.

Time Siege, the sequel, keeps the focus on Earth. James, Elise, Grace, and the Elfreth struggle to protect their encampment and pursue a risky plan to restore parts of the planet, even as corporate forces, represented by relentless security chief Kuo, close in. The books weave together firefights, time loops, and questions about who gets to decide whether a dying world is worth saving.

Rather than treat time travel as a puzzle game, the series uses it as a pressure cooker. Each jump has a cost, both on James’s body and on his conscience, and the big set pieces are grounded in the idea that history is full of endings where no one will be missed. Chu uses that bleak premise to power a story about stubborn hope.
