Author bio

Tillie Cole grew up on a farm in the north-east of England, in the Teesside countryside, with an English mother, a Scottish father, an older sister, and a shifting crowd of rescue animals. Rural life, long bus rides, and a steady stream of borrowed paperbacks turned her into a reader early on.

As a teenager she gravitated toward stories and ideas, which eventually led her to Newcastle University to study Religious Studies. She went on to earn a post-graduate teaching qualification and spent several years teaching high school social studies, moving between schools as she followed her professional rugby-player husband across Europe and North America.

For years, writing was something she talked about more than she did. After finishing what she jokingly calls her thousandth book on an e-reader, she turned to her husband and said she had an idea of her own. His challenge to stop talking and actually start writing became the push she needed to sit down and finish her first manuscript.

That first attempt opened the door to a string of novels that blend romance with very dark subject matter. Her Hades Hangmen books, beginning with It Ain't Me, Babe, follow an outlaw motorcycle club whose world collides with women escaping a violent apocalyptic cult. The Scarred Souls series, launched with Raze, digs into Russian and Georgian crime families, underground death pits, and captives who have been turned into numbered fighters.

With the Deadly Virtues stories, starting from the prequel The Fallen: Genesis and moving into Raphael and Jegudiel, she pushes even further into horror-tinged terrain. Those books track a brotherhood of men shaped by abuse in a religious institution, now using their brutality against the people who created them.

Cole is just as comfortable writing about college football and first love as she is about cults and cartel wars. The Sweet Home novels began as a new-adult campus romance between shy English student Molly Shakespeare and star quarterback Romeo Prince, then widened out to follow the Carillo brothers and the people who love them. These books carry heavy themes—poverty, grief, mental illness—but sit closer to contemporary romance than to her darkest work.

Her young adult stories have reached a much wider, often younger, audience. A Thousand Boy Kisses, about childhood best friends Poppy and Rune facing terminal illness and the promise of one thousand unforgettable kisses, became a word-of-mouth phenomenon among online readers and stayed on bestseller lists for months. Its follow-up, A Thousand Broken Pieces, shifts the focus to Poppy's sister Savannah and a grief-stricken hockey player, while Write Me For You follows two teens racing against their own ticking clocks as they write the story of their brief, intense love.

Across genres, some threads repeat. Her books are usually built around damaged characters, fierce loyalty, and the idea that love can sit alongside trauma without magically erasing it. Settings range from Italian vineyards in A Veil of Vines to London crime families in Lord of London Town, but the emotional core is often the same: people trying to make sense of faith, family, and pain.

After years of living in Italy, Canada, and the United States, Cole eventually moved back to the north-east of England with her family and now writes full-time. When she is not drafting or revising, she tends to keep things simple: time with her husband and children, long sessions on the sofa with a film on, strong coffee in hand, and the ongoing internal debate about whether she really needs that last piece of chocolate.
