Series background & context
Throwaways is Caitlin Kittredge in conspiracy thriller mode at full speed. The title tells you a lot about the world right away. A throwaway is a disposable operative, somebody used for a mission and discarded before they can talk. Abby Palmer and Dean Logan learn exactly how that works when their lives collide with ULTRA, a secret program built on mind control experiments, psychic weapons, and decades of buried damage.
Abby and Dean make an unusual pair. Abby is a veteran carrying severe trauma and hard-earned survival skills. Dean is a restless outsider with psychic abilities and a family history he would rather outrun. Neither of them trusts easily, and neither feels like a polished action hero. That roughness gives the series its energy. These are people who were already hurt by the system before they decided to fight it.
ULTRA is the engine underneath everything. The comic pulls from Cold War paranoia and MK-Ultra lore, then pushes it into a near-present story about surveillance, covert programs, disposable soldiers, and the way institutions use people up. Abby and Dean are not just running from assassins and fellow experiments. They are trying to figure out what was done to them, what their powers really mean, and how far the conspiracy reaches.
Nobody in this book gets to be normal.
As the story moves forward, the cast widens and the danger gets stranger. Friends become liabilities, enemies turn complicated, and new enhanced operatives keep entering the field. Dean's powers start taking a real toll, Abby keeps carrying the practical weight of staying alive, and the people running ULTRA are aiming far beyond a few rogue assets. The books start as a chase story and grow into something much bigger.
The tone is lean, paranoid, and action-heavy. There are psychic fights, betrayals, road-movie escapes, and government secrets stacked on top of one another, but the series still makes room for questions about identity, loyalty, and consent. If you like spy fiction with superhuman abilities and a mean streak, Throwaways is a very solid fit.
