Author bio

Thomas DePrima is an American indie science fiction author best known for his long-running A Galaxy Unknown space opera universe. He also writes paranormal tales and near-future thrillers, all published under his own imprint rather than through traditional houses.

As a kid he read whatever science fiction he could find, often picking up battered paperbacks from thrift stores and yard sales and working through them in stacks. That early habit of devouring stories about distant stars shows up in the way he builds his own sprawling setting.

Before he ever sold a book, DePrima spent years working in information technology. Day jobs in tech paid the bills and honed the practical side of his personality, but he kept circling back to the idea that he was supposed to be telling stories, not just supporting other people's systems.

In 1997 he finally pushed past daydreaming and posted his first work to a free online fiction site where the price of admission was critiquing other people's stories. The feedback was rough in places. Readers told him he could spin a plot but needed to tighten his grammar and polish his prose.

Instead of walking away, he used those comments as a checklist. He revised, read craft books, and kept sending out new chapters, slowly turning raw enthusiasm into something more disciplined. That mix of persistence and willingness to be edited shows up later in the cleaner, faster rhythm of his published work.

Print-on-demand technology gave him his first real path into print. After discovering a service that would put his novels into physical form without the heavy fees of old vanity presses, he began releasing books under his own steam and selling them quietly without much promotion.

The real turning point came around 2008, when he discovered the early Kindle program and other digital storefronts. With an IT background, he understood both how important visibility on those platforms could be and how to handle the technical side of formatting and publishing himself.

In 2010 he launched A Galaxy Unknown, introducing Ensign Jenetta Carver and a galaxy full of pirates, raiders, alien empires, and secret intelligence operations. The series grew into multiple spin-offs, including AGU: Border Patrol and AGU: Space Command Intelligence, and by the early 2010s his indie titles had already sold well over a hundred thousand copies.

Alongside the space opera work he has written the Arlene Watson paranormal duology, beginning with When the Spirit Moves You, and the Colton James thrillers A World Without Secrets and Vengeance is Personal. Across genres he gravitates toward capable protagonists who are thrown into situations far bigger than they expected and have to think their way out.

DePrima keeps a fairly low public profile, preferring to put his energy into the next story rather than promotion. From the outside his career looks simple, but it grew out of steady trial and error, a willingness to learn in public, and a belief that there is always room for one more fast, character-driven adventure among the stars.
