This Is Bandit Territory starts with one of Emma Dean's best chaos premises: a raven assassin gets tied to a group of raccoon shifter thieves, and then the whole thing keeps getting weirder. Emily is smart, lethal, and used to working alone. The raccoons, Jace, Ben, Chance, and Aiden, are very much not orderly men. Their chemistry is instant, but the series would not be half as fun if it were only about that.

These books love trouble.

What begins with a charged first meeting turns into a portal-hopping adventure involving contracts, alternate worlds, powerful objects, tricksters, and the sort of prophecy mess that never stays contained. Emily spends a lot of time trying to decide whether she wants to follow the job, follow the men, or follow the bigger mystery. Usually she has to do all three at once.

The world-building here leans less on fixed territory and more on motion. The group gets bounced out of the familiar Council of Paranormals setting into stranger spaces where rules change fast and survival depends on keeping up. That gives the series a more adventurous feel than Dean's pack and academy books. It is still paranormal romance, but it also has strong quest energy.

The group dynamic matters just as much as the plot. Emily and the raccoons are not polished or calm, and that is the point. They bicker, flirt, panic, scheme, and keep choosing each other even when the bigger mission is trying to tear them apart. There is also some MM in the mix, which makes the relationship web feel more lived in than a simple one-to-many setup.

If you want Emma Dean at her most playful and unpredictable, this series is a good bet. The stakes get genuinely big, but the books never lose that sneaky, scrappy bandit spirit.
