The Year of Luminous Love
by Lurlene McDaniel
2013
Three best friends step into life after high school, carrying dreams and messy realities from Tennessee to Tuscany. Love, loyalty, and adult choices make this one broader and more sweeping than McDaniel's early tearjerkers.
The Year of Chasing Dreams
by Lurlene McDaniel
2014
The story continues as the friends chase work, love, and futures that keep refusing to stay simple. It is a warm, romantic follow-up about ambition, distance, and staying connected while lives begin to change.
Wishes and Dreams

This short companion piece revisits the world of The Year books with more heartache, hope, and friendship. It works best as an emotional bridge alongside the main novels.

Series background & context
The Year books show a later side of Lurlene McDaniel's writing. Instead of centering a hospital crisis right away, the series opens outward, following close friends on the edge of adult life as they figure out love, work, loyalty, and what comes after high school. The Year of Luminous Love introduces a broader, more sweeping canvas than many of her earlier novels.
The friendships matter as much as the romances.
Part of the appeal is the setting. Tennessee farm country gives the story one kind of grounding, with land, family history, and financial pressure shaping what the characters can do. Then the books widen out further, bringing in travel and a more glamorous sense of possibility. That contrast between rootedness and escape gives the series some nice energy.
McDaniel still writes about heartbreak here, but the tone is a little different from the pure tearjerkers. These books are interested in adulthood arriving in pieces. A dream job can look less certain up close. First love can be real and still not solve everything. Old friends can want different futures without stopping being important to one another.
The Year of Chasing Dreams continues that thread, showing what happens when ambition, distance, and loyalty begin to pull in different directions. The companion story Wishes and Dreams adds a little more emotional texture to the same world.
If you want a McDaniel series that keeps her trademark feeling but stretches into a more expansive friendship-and-futures drama, The Year is a good place to go.
