Later books widen the world a bit, bringing in demons, fae blood, and threats that push beyond everyday witch politics. Even then, the series keeps coming back to the same question: what does it mean to belong to a place that knows your family history better than you do?

You can read these books as standalones, and they are written to work that way. Still, reading in order, starting with Payback's a Witch, gives the town more depth and makes the callbacks hit harder. The big pleasure of the series is watching Thistle Grove feel bigger and stranger each time, while also feeling more like home.
