Series background & context
The Witches of Thistle Grove books are contemporary fantasy romances set in a hidden magical town that runs on old family power, local grudges, and a very busy holiday calendar. Each novel follows a different lead, but the books share the same small-town map, recurring cast, and tangled history. If you like romance series where side characters keep drifting back into view, this one does that especially well.
The town is half the love story.
Thistle Grove looks cozy on the surface, but its charm sits on top of a pretty strict social order. Four old witch families, the Harlows, Blackmoores, Thorns, and Avramovs, have shaped the town for generations, and their rivalries still affect everything from business to festivals to who trusts whom. Magic is not just decorative here. It decides status, deepens old resentments, and turns family expectations into something much harder to ignore.
That gives the series its main engine. One book might start with a reluctant homecoming, another with sabotage before Beltane, another with a dating disaster, and another with forbidden magic gone very wrong, but they all grow out of the same web of history and obligation. Harper likes to promote side characters into center stage, so someone who is a friend, rival, or background troublemaker in one book may become the emotional core of the next.
And yes, the romances matter a lot.
These are warm, funny, fairly steamy books, but they are not weightless. Across the series, the characters deal with grief, breakups, memory loss, family pressure, and the awkward business of figuring out who they want to be as adults. The magical problems tend to intensify whatever is already hurting or unresolved. That means the love stories land best when the characters stop dodging their own baggage and start dealing with it, together or at least honestly.
The setting keeps everything connected. Thistle Grove has occult shops, orchards, bars, familiars, seasonal festivals, and just enough danger lurking around the edges to keep the cozy vibe from becoming too sweet. Later books widen the world a bit, bringing in demons, fae blood, and threats that push beyond everyday witch politics. Even then, the series keeps coming back to the same question: what does it mean to belong to a place that knows your family history better than you do?
You can read these books as standalones, and they are written to work that way. Still, reading in order, starting with Payback's a Witch, gives the town more depth and makes the callbacks hit harder. The big pleasure of the series is watching Thistle Grove feel bigger and stranger each time, while also feeling more like home.
