Series background & context
The Will Darling Adventures is KJ Charles in full 1920s pulp mode, and it is a lot of fun. The series follows Will Darling, a former soldier who comes back from the Great War with medals, scars, and very little direction, only to inherit a chaotic second-hand bookshop and stumble into spies, gangs, conspiracies, and state secrets. At the center of all that trouble is Kim Secretan, an aristocrat so charming, slippery, and suspicious that you understand both why Will wants him and why he keeps wanting to shake him.
The trilogy runs on the contrast between the two men. Will is practical, grounded, angry when he needs to be, and much less dazzled by upper-class nonsense than Kim expects. Kim is elegant, secretive, manipulative, brave in some ways, cowardly in others, and rarely telling the whole truth. That mismatch gives the books their energy. The romance is not a calm refuge from the plot. It is one of the most dangerous parts of it, because Will keeps having to decide how much risk he is willing to take on a man he cannot fully trust.
Bring tea, knives, and patience for Kim.
The setting is a huge part of the appeal. Charles writes the 1920s as fast, flashy, and a bit cracked around the edges. There are nightclubs, Bright Young Things, flappers, blackmail schemes, secret formulas, disreputable aristocrats, dodgy officials, and criminals who would really prefer not to explain themselves. The books move with the speed of old pulp adventures, but the character work keeps them from feeling flimsy. Will's experience as a veteran matters. So does class. So does the fact that queer relationships in this world still have to navigate real danger.
Each book raises both the external and emotional stakes. Slippery Creatures throws Will and Kim together and then blows trust apart. The Sugared Game drags Will back into Kim's orbit through criminal intrigue that lands far too close to home. Subtle Blood brings murder, family conflict, and long-simmering consequences crashing down together. There is an ongoing central arc here, and the series is much stronger when read in order. Charles is very clear about one important point, too: there is no full happy ending until book three.
If you like historical romance with propulsive plotting, strong voice, and a relationship built on friction as much as longing, this trilogy is a standout. It is probably the best choice in Charles's catalogue for readers who want action and emotion in equal measure. Also, if you enjoy a hero whose tolerance for upper-class nonsense gets lower with every chapter, Will Darling is hard to beat.
