Where should I start?
If you want magic and Victorian danger: The Magpie Lord → A Case of Possession → Flight of Magpies
If you want Regency politics and class tension: A Fashionable Indulgence → A Seditious Affair → A Gentleman's Position
If you want foggy Victorian mystery: An Unseen Attraction → An Unnatural Vice → An Unsuitable Heir
If you want 1920s spies and pulp energy: Slippery Creatures → The Sugared Game → Subtle Blood
Author bio
KJ Charles is a British writer whose books move easily between historical romance, fantasy, suspense, and murder mystery. Before she published her own fiction, she spent twenty years working as an editor in British publishing, including a long stretch in romance. That background shows in the clean shape of her stories, but the books themselves never feel tidy or overpolished. They feel lively, sharp, funny, and very human.
She came to writing from the publishing side first. For years she was the person helping other books work on the page, and then, as she has put it, she switched sides. After moving through freelance work and editing, she became a full-time writer. She still brings an editor's sense of structure to what she does, especially in the way her plots tighten, twist, and pay off.
Her breakthrough novel was The Magpie Lord, published in 2013.
That book is still one of the clearest entry points into her work. It has a disgraced aristocrat, a furious magician, a nasty supernatural problem, and a lot of chemistry. From there, readers often branch out in two directions. Some go deeper into the magical side, with books like The Secret Casebook of Simon Feximal, where a ghost-hunter and his writer companion move through eerie cases over the course of years. Others head for the straight historicals, where the fantasy drops away but the danger, longing, and class friction stay firmly in place.
A Seditious Affair is a good example of that second path. It takes a radical bookseller and a government man, puts them in the same city and on opposite sides of politics, and lets the pressure build. Think of England does something different again, mixing Edwardian house-party suspense with espionage and attraction between two men who mistrust each other on sight. Then there is The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen, which shifts to Romney Marsh and brings in smugglers, blackmail, family trouble, and a love story with mud on its boots.
She is very good at putting people in trouble, then making the trouble personal.
Across her books, certain things come up again and again: queer lives lived under pressure, social class as a daily force, found families, damaged men and women trying to build something safer, and settings that do a lot of work. Her England is full of fog, marshland, back streets, bad houses, clubs, bookshops, thieves' kitchens, and lonely country estates. Even when the plots get wild, the places feel solid.
Readers also tend to come back for the mix. A KJ Charles book might give you a romance, a conspiracy, a murder investigation, a ghost, a jewel theft, or a very tense dinner party, sometimes all in the same story. The tone can swing from dryly funny to genuinely dark without feeling forced. She has written long series, linked worlds, and standalones, and they all share that same sense that feelings matter, but so do money, politics, danger, and who gets to be safe.
She now lives in London with her husband, two children, a retired cat, and what she has described as a carnivorous garden. That small detail feels about right. Her books are smart and controlled, but they always have teeth.
