Each one exposes the strain between rulers and subjects, victors and defeated, public ritual and private resentment.

That political backdrop gives the series more bite than a standard medieval whodunit. Catrin and Rhys are not simply trying to identify a killer. They are also trying to protect ordinary Welsh people from suspicion, cruelty, and retaliation, while working close enough to the crown to see how power actually operates. Sometimes the danger comes from murder. Sometimes it comes from being noticed by the wrong person.

The tone is tense, intelligent, and a little bittersweet. Woodbury makes good use of the royal court, but she also keeps an eye on the land beyond it, on abbeys, households, roads, songs, and the ways conquered people hold on to memory. If you like historical mysteries where personal stakes and national stakes are tightly braided together, this is one of her strongest series.
