Author bio

Sarah Woodbury writes novels set in medieval Wales, but she did not come to fiction in a straight line. Today she has written more than fifty books and sold more than two million copies, all while staying focused on the same place that caught her imagination years ago.

She was a creative child, then got serious about school early and kept going until she earned a PhD in anthropology in 1995, at twenty-seven. After that, life took a different turn. She became a full-time homeschooling mother for twenty years, and for a long time writing fiction stayed in the background.

Then the stories got too loud to ignore.

She has said that working with her children and seeing their creativity helped her find her own again. Her first finished novel stayed in the trunk, unsalvageable by her own telling, but the next ideas came faster. One of them arrived in a dream about driving a minivan to Wales to save a medieval prince, which tells you a lot about where her imagination likes to go.

Wales is the constant thread. Woodbury has Welsh ancestry, but she did not visit Wales until university. That first trip stuck. She has said she fell in love with the country, the language, and the people, and that affection shows up everywhere in her work, from the politics of princes and abbots to the practical details of roads, weather, households, and castles.

A lot of readers begin with Daughter of Time, the opening doorway into her After Cilmeri books, where time travel collides with the life of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, the last native Prince of Wales. Others find her through The Good Knight, which starts the Gareth and Gwen mysteries, or Crouchback, which moves into the tense years after Edward I's conquest. If you want her Arthurian side, The Last Pendragon and Cold My Heart show how she blends Welsh legend, faith, and politics without losing sight of the people at the center.

That mix is really her signature. Her books often bring together loyalty and betrayal, family bonds and statecraft, romance and danger. Even when magic or time travel enters the story, the stakes stay human: who can be trusted, what home means, what a ruler owes a people, and how ordinary lives get bent by history.

She makes the past feel busy, lived in, and a little dangerous.

She also writes history the way an anthropologist might approach it, as the lived experience of real people rather than a parade of dates. That helps explain why her novels are packed with texture but still move quickly. Readers come for the medieval Wales setting, but they tend to stay for the ongoing families, the careful political knots, and the feeling that every choice matters.

These days she splits her time between Oregon and Wales. She and her husband gave all four of their children Welsh names, which feels exactly on brand. She is also active in historical fiction and writing organizations, and she still seems happiest when a new story opens a fresh path back into the Welsh past.
