Series background & context
This is the branch of Edelheit's fantasy that turns toward dwarves and stays there. Written with Quincy J. Allen, The Way of Legend gives the wider world a different center of gravity. Instead of following imperial officers or elven rangers, the story rests on Tovak Stonehammer, a dwarf who begins as an outsider among his own people. He is a pariah, carrying family shame and other people's contempt, which makes him an easy character to root for from page one.
The larger situation is grim. The Horde is advancing, old defenses are failing, and the dwarven nations are being forced into movement and hard choices they never wanted to make. In Reclaiming Honor, Tovak is trying to prove that disgrace does not define him. In Forging Destiny, he has earned a place in the Baelix Guard Company, but belonging is still fragile and every victory feels temporary.
Then the burden gets heavier.
By Paladin's Light, Tovak is not only a stubborn fighter trying to keep up with larger events. He has become a holy warrior tied to divine purpose, and the books lean harder into questions of faith, duty, and survival. Hidden fortresses, underground roads, desperate missions, and the weight of leadership all become part of his path. The series keeps the focus personal, but the stakes never stay small for long.
What makes these books stand out is viewpoint. Dwarves are often side characters in big fantasy. Here they are the heart of the story. Their culture, pride, endurance, faith, and internal divisions all matter. The result is a military fantasy that feels solid underfoot, full of marching, hardship, and group loyalty, but also full of old stone, sacred duty, and the fear that a whole people might lose their future.
The tone fits Edelheit well. There is plenty of action, but it is tied to discipline and persistence more than swagger. Tovak is brave, but he is not effortless. He keeps having to earn his place again and again, which gives the series a nice emotional backbone.
If you want the Last War world from a dwarven angle, with an outcast hero, campaign pressure, divine calling, and a lot of stubborn grit, The Way of Legend is a very satisfying offshoot.
