Author bio
Marc Alan Edelheit was born in New York State and later built much of his adult life in the Northeast before moving in 2021 to a cabin in the mountains of North Carolina. He writes fantasy and science fiction, but a lot of his work begins with an old love of history, especially Rome, military life, and the way large empires strain under pressure.
His path into books was not a straight line. Edelheit earned a bachelor's degree in science, then completed graduate study in education as a reading and writing specialist, along with a master's in administration. Before fiction became his full time job, he spent years working in leadership roles outside publishing, including in healthcare, while writing in the margins of a very busy life.
That changed in 2015, when he decided to stop treating fiction as a someday plan and self-published Stiger’s Tigers. The novel introduced readers to Ben Stiger, Roman flavored military fantasy, and the mix of battles, politics, and divine danger that would become one of Edelheit's signatures. A few years later, in 2018, he made the jump to writing full time.
He is very much a history person.
You can feel that in Stiger’s Tigers, Stiger, and Lost Legio IX. Even when the books bring in gods, dragons, or strange worlds, the details that hold them together are practical ones: command decisions, unit loyalty, supply problems, weather, ground gained and lost, and the cost of asking tired people to keep marching. His fantasy often feels lived in because the soldiers have to eat, carry, fear, and endure like soldiers.
He has also shown a habit of building connected shelves of stories rather than staying in one lane. Eli follows an elven ranger through a faster, more intimate thread of the Last War world. Reclaiming Honor, written with Quincy J. Allen, shifts to dwarven characters and a different view of the same wider struggle. In science fiction novels such as Fallen Empire, Off Midway Station, and Forged in Battle, he keeps that same interest in leadership under stress, only now the legions are crews and warships.
Travel seems to matter to him too. He has written about traveling widely in Europe and Asia, and has mentioned crossing Checkpoint Charlie toward the end of the Cold War. That curiosity shows up in his fiction. His worlds are full of borders, campaigns, frontier places, old ruins, and people trying to understand cultures that do not think the way they do.
He reads constantly.
Edelheit has said he tears through several print books and audiobooks a week, from history to fantasy to science fiction. That wide reading helps explain why his work can move from Roman inspired infantry battles to post imperial space warfare without feeling like a stunt. Different settings, same fascination with order, collapse, duty, belief, and the people stuck making hard calls.
These days, North Carolina appears to be home base, after years raising his family in eastern Pennsylvania. What readers usually come to him for is pretty simple: competent fighters, dangerous missions, clear stakes, and the feeling that every win costs something. He keeps returning to honor, leadership, loyalty, and the burden of carrying a name or a destiny. That through line is what makes his bibliography feel less like a pile of separate series and more like one long conversation about pressure, service, and survival.
