A Queen Only Lives Twice
by Lynn Morrison
2022
Ancient warrior queen Boudicca thinks helping another resurrected queen adjust to modern life will be easy, until Cleopatra insists on joining a road trip to find a missing friend. Their cross-country chase pits two immortal women against gangsters, gods, and old grudges.
Series background & context
The Wandering Witch series spins out of the Midlife in Raven world and sends two legendary queens on a modern road trip. Boudicca, already familiar to Raven readers as a formidable witch with a warrior's past, takes centre stage alongside a newly returned Cleopatra VII.
In A Queen Only Lives Twice, Boudicca thinks she is simply helping another ancient queen adjust to smartphones, motorways, and coffee shops. She plans to ease Cleopatra into the twenty‑first century with the help of a trusted friend in California. That plan collapses when the friend goes missing and armed men show up instead of a warm welcome.
Forced onto the road, Boudicca and Cleopatra follow a trail of clues that leads them through small towns, big cities, and desert highways. They tangle with modern gangsters, old enemies from the gods' world, and plenty of people who underestimate two middle‑aged women in a borrowed car. The story borrows some of the chaotic energy of a Thelma‑and‑Louise‑style caper, but keeps the focus on friendship and survival rather than romance.
A key pleasure of the series is watching how differently the two queens handle the present. Boudicca has had centuries to adapt and carries the scars of both her human life and her service to the gods. Cleopatra is brilliant, quick to learn, and absolutely unwilling to abandon her royal bearing, even when faced with airport security or credit cards. Their banter, disagreements, and reluctant respect give the books much of their charm.
Although readers who know the Midlife in Raven series will recognise names and magical rules, The Wandering Witch is built to stand on its own. It offers a look at Morrison's wider supernatural world, one where ancient figures slip quietly into the modern day and discover that old patterns of power still apply.
If you enjoy road‑trip urban fantasy, immortal heroines, and stories where history literally rides shotgun in the front seat, this series makes a lively detour from her more traditional cozy mysteries.
