Series background & context

The Waiting series is the book world many readers most strongly associate with Ginger Scott, and it makes sense. This is where she first locked in the mix of sports, first love, humor, heartbreak, and growing pains that would shape so much of her later work.

At the center are Nolan Lennox and Reed Johnson. Nolan starts as the tomboy who thinks she has herself figured out, right up until high school makes everything less simple. Reed arrives carrying the kind of local football legacy that turns a teenage boy into a symbol before he has had time to decide who he actually wants to be. Their story begins in Waiting on the Sidelines, stretches through college and distance in Going Long, and returns to them as adults in The Hail Mary.

This series grows up with its characters.

That is one of its best qualities. The first book is very much about high school, first heartbreak, friendship shifts, and the pressure to become somebody fast. The second widens the lens to college, ambition, and whether first love can survive when dreams start pulling in different directions. The third book jumps ahead and looks at marriage, aging, fear, and what happens when the thing that has shaped your whole life, football, can no longer stay exactly where it has always been.

The sports thread matters, but the heart of the series is really Nolan and Reed learning how to love each other without losing themselves. Scott gives them room to be funny, stubborn, selfish, loyal, and scared. She also lets the setting do work. Small town expectations, football culture, and family history all press on the relationship in ways that feel personal rather than decorative.

If you want a romance that truly tracks a couple over time, this series is a strong place to start. It is tender, messy, and full of the kind of emotional milestones that make readers feel like they have grown up alongside the characters.
