These romances understand that desire can be practical and still be real.

That is one of the best things about the series. Linden gives her characters reasons to hesitate that go far beyond wounded pride. They worry about income, dependence, social position, old bargains, family expectations, and whether love can survive the truth once it comes out. The heroes are often titled men on shaky ground, and the heroines are rarely waiting around to be rescued. They work, scheme, negotiate, observe, and keep score. Even when the setup sounds dramatic, the feelings underneath it are grounded.

The Regency setting helps, because this is a world where a bad investment or a bad marriage can change the whole course of a life. Yet the books never feel heavy. There is wit, heat, and a pleasing sense that everyone is a little smarter after a bruising conversation. If you like historical romance where financial stakes matter almost as much as emotional ones, and where a gaming table can be as revealing as a ballroom, The Wagers of Sin is a strong series to pick up.
