Series background & context

The events of The Void Trilogy take place roughly twelve hundred years after the conclusion of the Commonwealth Saga, transporting readers to a galaxy that has changed dramatically. Humanity has flourished during this long era of relative peace, expanding across the stars to form a Greater Commonwealth that includes both human and alien civilizations.

Technology has advanced to the point where death is largely an inconvenience rather than an end. Citizens utilize advanced rejuvenation techniques to live for centuries, backing up their memories in secure networks to ensure they can be reborn even after a fatal accident. It is a society of immense wealth and stability, yet it remains vulnerable to one ancient, sleeping danger.

At the center of the galaxy lies the Void.

This artificial micro-universe is protected by an impenetrable event horizon and has existed since the dawn of the universe. To the civilizations outside, it is a terrifying anomaly that slowly devours star systems to sustain itself. But inside, the rules of reality are completely rewritten. High-technology fails to function, while the human mind gains the ability to manipulate matter directly.

The narrative is structured around two distinct, alternating storylines.

The first thread follows the political and military intrigue of the Commonwealth in the year 3589. A human dreamer named Inigo has spent years telepathically broadcasting visions of a wonderful life inside the Void. These dreams have spawned a massive religious movement known as Living Dream. When the movement builds a fleet of ships to undertake a pilgrimage into the Void, the rest of the galaxy panics. Fears that their entry will trigger a catastrophic expansion phase—one that could consume the entire galaxy—ignite a frantic race to stop the fleet.

The second storyline feels more like high fantasy than science fiction.

Readers are taken inside the Void to the world of Querencia, specifically the tiered city of Makkathran. Here, we follow the life of Edeard, a young man who possesses powerful psychic abilities in a society that resembles pre-industrial Europe. As Edeard rises from a tragic background to become a constable and eventually the legendary "Waterwalker," his struggles with local corruption and bandits provide a sharp, grounding contrast to the interstellar politics outside.

Hamilton weaves these disparate threads together to create a massive tapestry of cause and effect. As the Living Dream pilgrimage draws closer to the Void’s boundary, the events in Edeard’s past begin to have direct, explosive consequences for the high-tech future outside. It is a unique blend of genres, merging the scope of a widescreen space opera with the character-focused intimacy of an epic fantasy quest.
