Series background & context

The Vampires of Candle Bay and Crimson Cove brings together two connected vampire worlds. One comes from Tamara Thorne's Candle Bay, centered on the Darling family and their grand coastal hotel. The other comes from Alistair Cross's Crimson Cove novels. In Darling Girls, the two groups finally meet for an event that should be a celebration and becomes anything but simple.

The Darlings are not the kind of vampires who hide in a ruined castle. They run the Candle Bay Hotel and Spa, a restored cliffside inn that welcomes ordinary guests while sheltering an extraordinary family. Their world includes old rivalries, dangerous appetites, complicated loyalties, and the challenge of existing beside humans without making every problem worse.

Vampire family reunions are rarely peaceful.

The action moves to Eternity, California, the strange northern mountain town introduced in Thorne's Eternity. Vampires from Candle Bay and Crimson Cove gather for the Biting Man Festival, a rare tradition with a long history. Old enemies, unstable bloodlust, and the arrival of someone determined to kill vampires turn the gathering into a very risky reunion.

The series has more humor and romantic entanglement than a purely bleak vampire story, but it does not ignore the horror. These vampires have their own rules and histories, and the danger increases when those rules break down. Readers can expect blood, dark comedy, romantic tension, feuds, and a large cast whose alliances may change under pressure.

The shared setting is part of the fun. Thorne's fictional California connects haunted houses, witch towns, strange mountain communities, and coastal hotels, allowing familiar characters and places to overlap. Eternity is especially suited to a vampire festival because it already has a reputation for the bizarre, from old legends and unexplained sightings to an unusually tolerant population.

Fang meets fang.

Darling Girls works as a crossover, but readers get more from it if they first read Candle Bay. That novel introduces the Darling family, the hotel, and the vampire tensions that travel with them. Readers who want the complete crossover picture can also read the Crimson Cove books, though this page focuses on Thorne's side of the story.

This is a good fit for readers who like their vampire fiction with a travelogue feel, a found-family mess, and plenty of supernatural complications. Start with Candle Bay, then move to Darling Girls for the full collision of the Candle Bay and Crimson Cove worlds.
