Author bio
Tamara Thorne was born in Los Angeles, California, and has spent her life closely tied to Southern California and its surrounding desert, mountain, and coastal towns. That landscape shows up again and again in her fiction, though usually with an unsettling extra feature: a haunted hotel, a cursed family estate, a vanished town secret, or something moving in the dark.
She began publishing novels in 1991, first using the pen name Chris Curry. Her debut, Winter Scream, was written with L. Dean James and later received a Bram Stoker Award nomination for Superior Achievement in a First Novel. Thorne also used the Curry name for early books including Panic and Thunder Road.
The ghosts came early and stayed.
Her work often takes familiar California settings and tips them slightly off balance. In Haunted, a horror writer and his daughter move into a notorious Victorian house on the coast. Moonfall heads into the mountains, where a school for girls and a town's old tragedies hide a much darker story. Bad Things brings a widower back to his ancestral home in Santo Verde, where the greenjacks that frightened him as a child may be real after all.
Thorne likes a big cast, local gossip, family history, and people who arrive somewhere hoping for a fresh start. They rarely get one. Her stories move between haunted-house horror, witches, vampires, folklore, conspiracies, strange creatures, and the occasional dose of dark humor. The scares can be graphic, but the books also make room for romance, messy families, and characters who cope with danger by making an ill-timed joke.
Small towns have long memories.
That idea runs through Eternity, where Sheriff Zach Tully leaves Los Angeles for a supposedly quiet northern California town only to find murders, impossible legends, and a killer linked to Jack the Ripper. In Candle Bay, the staff and guests of a grand coastal hotel become entangled with the secrets of its vampire owners. The connected settings give many of her novels the feeling of a crooked road map through an alternate California.
Her 2003 Sorority Trilogy takes the action to Greenbriar University. In The Sorority: Eve, The Sorority: Merilynn, and The Sorority: Samantha, three young women encounter the sinister power behind an exclusive campus sisterhood. The books combine college-life drama with occult danger and a secret society that expects loyalty at a terrible price.
Later, Thorne began a frequent collaboration with Alistair Cross. Their shared work includes The Cliffhouse Haunting, Mother, Darling Girls, and the continuing Ravencrest stories. The Ravencrest Saga follows governess Belinda Moorland into a vast California manor packed with ghosts, witchcraft, old crimes, family curses, and servants who know far more than they first admit. It is gothic horror with a busy household, dangerous attractions, and plenty of locked doors.
Thorne's interest in the paranormal isn't confined to fiction. A journalist by training, she has investigated reported hauntings and anomalous events, appeared on paranormal programming, and written about haunted places and local lore. She and Cross also investigated an allegedly haunted cabin in California's Gold Country, an experience that became Five Nights in a Haunted Cabin.
Whether she is writing alone or with a collaborator, Thorne returns to the same inviting question: what if the local ghost story is true?
