Series background & context
The Valkeryn Chronicles take Greig Becks love of speculative history and push it into a far future war story. At the center is Arnold Arn Singer, an ordinary teenager from Illinois who is flung out of his own time and into a world where humanity is gone and new species rule.
Arn arrives in Valkeryn, a medieval style kingdom of Wolfen, evolved, sentient descendants of dogs and wolves who walk upright, carry swords and follow a strict code of honor. They have spent millennia fighting monstrous rival races for control of a beautiful but brutal world, and many of them believe Arn is a legendary Ancient whose return was foretold.
In Return of the Ancients Arn struggles to survive long enough to understand this strange land. He learns the language, falls in with Wolfen warriors and courtiers, and slowly uncovers hints about what happened to mankind. At the same time, powerful enemies are moving, and the balance between the great kingdoms is starting to fail.
The Dark Lands widens the scope. Valkeryn has fallen, and Arn finds himself on the run with the heir to the throne, heading into territories filled with predators, ruins and things older than any legend. The Wolfen are scattered, their enemies are ascendant, and the war that has been simmering for ages is about to erupt in full.
Back in Arns original timeline, events in the distant future are tearing at reality. Experiments with a massive particle collider have opened a gateway that is destabilizing the planet. Colonel Marion Briggs leads a team of special operations soldiers through that portal to retrieve the missing teenager, close the breach and prevent collapse at home.
The result is a story that jumps between a modern Earth scrambling to understand what it has done and a fantastical far future where Wolfen, monstrous Lygon and other species fight for survival. Beck leans into battles, political intrigue and harsh landscapes, but he also keeps the focus on friendships, loyalty and the question of what it means to be human when humans are almost extinct.
If you come to the series from the Alex Hunter books you will recognize the fast pacing and high stakes, but Valkeryn adds more of an epic, almost mythic flavor. Expect sword fights alongside strange technology, prophecies that collide with physics and a young hero who has to decide whether to risk everything for a world that is not his own.
