The Center of the Earth books let Greig Beck rework a classic idea for a modern audience. Instead of a straight retelling of an old journey, he imagines multiple hidden routes to a vast world under the crust and asks what has been evolving down there while humanity stayed on the surface.

In To The Center Of The Earth caving specialist Mike Monroe is hired to lead a team into the deepest known cave system in the former Soviet Union. Their path is based on a centuries old manuscript and the rantings of an elderly woman locked in an asylum who claims to have already been to the planets core. The further they descend, the clearer it becomes that her story was not delusion.

Mike and journalist Jane Baxter eventually break through into a blistering realm of jungles, oceans and strange pale creatures shaped by intense heat and pressure. They escape, but their bodies and minds do not come back unchanged. The experience leaves questions about what else is down there and how many entrances exist.

Return To The Center Of The Earth brings them back underground when signs point to a Russian military expedition heading for the same world. Mike, Jane and a mixed group of mercenaries and scientists follow, hoping to find answers about the creatures they encountered and to keep a potentially world changing discovery out of hostile hands.

In Escape From The Center Of The Earth the stakes jump again. Disturbances at Russias Kola superdeep borehole and a new rift in the Mariana Trench suggest that the underworld is pushing back. Mike and Jane join parallel missions racing to rescue a mysterious voice calling from far below and to locate a substance that might cure the slow burning damage from their first journey.

The trilogy keeps the sense of wonder from classic subterranean fiction but layers in modern fears about resource exploitation, genetic mutation and global catastrophe. Expect underground jungles, ancient ruins and titanic predators, but also an ongoing thread about what contact between the two worlds might do to both.
