Series background & context

The Valentine Law series combines contemporary romance with the personal and professional pressure surrounding a prominent law firm. Bailey West uses the legal setting as a way into bigger questions about loyalty, trust, ambition, family, and the choices people make when their private lives begin affecting everyone around them.

The reading order matters most at the beginning. Serving Time introduces Samuel Valentine, the driven head of a successful firm, and Averie Patterson, an accomplished attorney whose work helping women puts her directly in his path. A case forces them to work together even though Samuel is used to keeping outsiders at a distance. Their story continues immediately in Free Indeed.

That first romance is a two-part journey.

The later books expand beyond Samuel and Averie while keeping the firm and its wider circle in view. Trusting the Process follows Keeva and Kerem Abernathy after infidelity puts their long marriage under strain. The emotional question is not whether betrayal hurts, it does, but whether two people can do the difficult work required to understand what comes next.

Depth of Love shifts to Morris Owens, a senior associate at Valentine and Belle and a father of two young daughters. Cambria McLaren has built a career as a hairstylist after a difficult childhood and is determined not to settle for the wrong relationship. Their connection grows through friendship, proximity, and the practical realities of parenting, co-parenting, and learning to trust.

The series is romantic and emotional, with high personal stakes rather than procedural legal suspense. Courtrooms and careers are part of the backdrop, but the real tension comes from relationships under pressure. West gives the characters room to talk through hard things, make mistakes, seek help, and decide what accountability looks like.

Start with Serving Time and continue straight into Free Indeed. Then read Trusting the Process and Depth of Love in order to see how the Valentine Law world broadens from its central legal partnership into stories about marriage, family, and new love.
