The Sheep Dragon

by LG Estrella

2021

In another bundle of Unconventional Heroes tales, Timmy tries to fund a war effort by asking a young dragon to guard a flock of magical sheep. What should be simple herding turns into a chain of disasters involving mutant livestock, demonic incursions, and very nervous farmers.

The Hungry Dragon Cookie Company

by LG Estrella

2018

This story collection follows Timmy and his crew through a series of smaller capers built around a wildly impractical business idea. Running a cookie company fronted by a terrifying dragon seems like easy money until health inspectors, assassins, and eldritch friends get involved.

Series background & context

The Unconventional Heroes Side Stories sit alongside the main necromancer novels and dive into the gaps between big missions. They show what Timmy and his crew get up to when they are not saving kingdoms, and they answer questions that the core books only have time to hint at.

The Hungry Dragon Cookie Company explores what happens when Timmy decides that a small business might solve some of his problems. The idea is simple enough. Open a bakery, put a frighteningly powerful dragon on the sign, and use the profits to rebuild the castle and keep everyone in food and weapons. In practice it means juggling health and safety rules, supply chains, and the appetites of a dragon that thinks entire cows make good snacks.

Those stories also step away from Timmy to spotlight other members of the team. Readers see more of Katie's schemes, Gerald's panic driven courage, Avraniel's creative approach to property damage, and Amanda's attempts to acquire the blood she needs without looking even more suspicious than an ancient vampire normally does. There is even time for Sam, the protoplasmic horror in the basement, to develop a serious cake habit.

The Sheep Dragon picks up later in the timeline, once the war against the Eternal Empire has spread. Timmy is still chasing a pardon and still trying to survive, but now he has to think about logistics. One of his bright ideas involves asking a young dragon to look after a flock of magical sheep. On paper it is an efficient way to fund the war effort. In reality it tests the limits of the phrase "house trained dragon."

Across both collections Estrella uses shorter tales to play with tone and scale. Some pieces are quiet slices of life, such as necromancers attending conventions or dealing with mundane repairs. Others involve surprise demonic incursions, bizarre magical contracts, or monsters that turn out to be more misunderstood than evil. The books deepen the sense of a living world where adventures do not stop when the last chapter ends.

You can read the side stories after the first couple of Unconventional Heroes novels or save them for dessert once you know the main cast. Either way they offer a generous extra helping of the humour, heart, and reckless spellcasting that define the series.
