Series background & context
Shannon and Dean Hale's Squirrel Girl books take a Marvel hero and drop her into a middle school story with a lot of heart. Doreen Green is fourteen, newly moved from California to suburban New Jersey, and trying to handle the usual problems of a new school while also hiding a tail and a very unusual set of powers.
Those powers are exactly what they sound like. Doreen is strong, agile, squirrel-connected, and far more capable than most people expect. The fun of the series is that she does not turn into a gloomy vigilante. She is earnest, awkward, funny, and determined to help, whether that means dealing with neighborhood troublemakers or a full-on supervillain with a grudge.
These are superhero books that care as much about lunch tables as crime fighting.
The first book, Squirrel Meets World, works as an origin story, with Doreen trying to make friends and figure out what kind of hero she wants to be. 2 Fuzzy, 2 Furious keeps the comedy going while raising the pressure on school, homework, friendship, and secret-identity balance. The stakes get bigger, but the tone stays bright and playful.
If you like superhero stories that run on kindness, teamwork, and ridiculous confidence rather than angst, this series delivers that. Doreen's best power is not just that she can leap, climb, or outsmart villains. It is that she keeps choosing generosity, even when being normal would be easier. That makes these books feel warm, fast, and very easy to root for.
