Axel Nielsen's childhood is shattered when his family is murdered and their farm is burned to the ground. Swearing vengeance, he grows into a man people hire to handle dangerous problems, even as his past keeps pulling him toward violence.
Series background & context
The Trouble Shooter is a two-part Western thriller built around one central idea, what happens to a kid who survives the worst day of his life and then has to grow up anyway. The story begins in Dakota Territory on an isolated family farm, where life is hard but predictable until it is not. In The Trouble Shooter: Part One, ten-year-old Axel Nielsen loses everything when the farm is burned and his parents and brothers are murdered. He is left with grief, anger, and a promise to himself, someday he will find the men responsible.
It is not a quiet kind of story.
Petit follows Axel into adulthood as he learns skills that make him useful, and dangerous, in a frontier world. The title "trouble shooter" fits because Axel becomes the person people turn to when a situation has already gone bad and someone needs it handled. His work feels part investigator and part hired problem-solver, tracking lies, reading people, and stepping into messes no one else wants, especially when the law is far away or compromised. That work sends him through small towns, rail camps, and lonely stretches of prairie, meeting people desperate enough to hire him and ruthless enough to kill to keep secrets.
Along the way, Axel's relationship with Elsa Johannsen, later known as Ella, keeps the story tied to everyday hopes, a home, a future, and a life that is not built entirely around revenge. Part One moves through hard country and harder confrontations, and it builds toward a courtroom turning point where Axel's past is dragged into the light. Justice is not simple, and neither is survival.
In The Trouble Shooter Part Two, Axel is ready to believe in a normal life after everything he has survived. He and Ella board a train for Denver expecting relief and distance from the danger behind them, but he quickly realizes that trouble does not respect geography or plans. The second half keeps the pressure on as Axel tries to protect the life he wants without becoming the person he hates.
Across both books, you can expect a tighter, more suspense-forward pace than many of Petit's standalone Westerns. There is romance, but it is not a detour, it is part of what Axel is fighting for. Read the two parts in order, they are one long story told in two runs, with the same wounds and the same enemies still in play.
