Author bio

CJ Petit was an American novelist who wrote a large catalog of frontier Westerns and Western romance. The stories begin in hard places, and they stay grounded there.

He lived in Bellevue, Nebraska, and his writing life started later than most, after a long career in the U.S. Air Force. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on February 8, 1950, and he eventually built a second career as an independent writer with a very steady output.

Petit enlisted in the Air Force in 1968. For roughly half his career he worked in medical imaging as a radiology technician. In 1980 he was commissioned as an officer and moved into missile operations. He retired as a major after about 26 years in uniform, carrying with him the habits of planning, routine, and getting the job done.

In 1995, he was diagnosed with stage IV cancer affecting his throat and lymph glands. Radiation treatment saved his life, but it also left damage that built up over time, bringing long stretches of medical trouble and limitations that changed what day-to-day life looked like.

Eventually, it took his voice.

By 2011, worsening health problems pushed him onto disability and kept him mostly at home. Writing became a way to stay busy and stay connected, and he leaned into it the way he had leaned into work before. In 2016, at age 66, he began his first novel, Rock Creek. He called himself a "yarn spinner", and the label fit, he was happiest building a story one scene at a time.

Once he found his rhythm, he did not slow down.

Over the next several years he published at a pace that surprised readers, releasing 96 full-length novels in less than eight years. By the early 2020s his books had sold in the millions across formats. Many of his titles are anchored in specific places or names, and they often connect through a larger shared world, familiar towns, shared history, and characters who reappear when you least expect it.

His stories treat the West as a place of work as much as gunfire: wagon trains pushing through bad weather, railroads creeping into new towns, and families trying to build something that will last. Books like Ghost Train and The Inheritance lean into suspense and investigation. The Joe Beck novels, beginning with Unwanted, track the slow grind from trail life to boomtown, where a "fresh start" can feel like a moving target.

He also liked long-form family storytelling. The Evans books (starting with Dylan's Journey) follow one family through mining accidents, ranch country, and the everyday losses that shape people. Later, The Trouble Shooter: Part One introduced Axel Nielsen and shifted toward a faster, higher-stakes pace, with a young man trying to live with trauma while the past keeps reaching for him.

Petit was married twice and had two children. In the early 1980s he married Lauren MacKenzie, who he affectionately called his "Elf". He wrote from home in Bellevue while living with the long aftermath of cancer treatment, and he kept publishing even when speaking became difficult. He died on October 7, 2024, leaving behind a huge shelf of frontier stories that are easy to pick up in whatever order fits your mood.
