The Tea Rose

by Jennifer Donnelly

2002

Set in 1888 East London and later New York, this first Rose novel follows tea factory worker Fiona Finnegan as tragedy destroys her family and dreams, forcing her to rebuild a life in business while secretly pursuing justice and lost love.

Series background & context

Jennifer Donnelly’s Tea Rose books form a sprawling historical saga that starts in the alleys and docklands of 1880s East London and eventually stretches to New York, Africa, California, and the deserts of the Middle East. Across three novels and companion novellas, the series follows the Finnegan family and their friends as they chase love, survive betrayal, and try to build better lives in a world changing at high speed.

At its heart, though, this is a story about resilience.

The story begins in The Tea Rose, where teenage Fiona Finnegan works long days in a tea warehouse and dreams of opening a shop with her childhood sweetheart, Joe Bristow. Union politics, ruthless business rivals, and the shadow of Jack the Ripper steadily close in on her family. After a violent loss shatters everything she knows, Fiona flees to New York with her younger brother and slowly claws her way back, turning a failing West Side grocery into the seed of a trading empire.

The Winter Rose shifts the spotlight to India Selwyn Jones, an idealistic young doctor from a privileged background who insists on treating patients in London’s poorest neighborhoods. There she collides with Sid Malone, the feared gang leader who actually has deep ties to Fiona’s past. India is engaged to ambitious politician Freddie Lytton, whose hunger for power makes him as dangerous as any criminal. The novel follows these intertwined lives from Parliament and East End clinics to colonial Africa and the cliffs of Northern California.

The Wild Rose follows explorer and photographer Willa Alden and adventurer Seamus Finnegan into the turbulent years just before and during World War I. Willa, fiercely independent and living with a life changing injury, is determined not to be defined by either her disability or her long history with Seamie. Their story unfolds against a backdrop of archaeological digs, desert campaigns, espionage, and shifting borders, as old secrets surface and the next generation faces choices as stark as those their parents made.

The main trilogy is now joined by Rose Petals novellas like Molly's Letter and Where Roses Fall, which drop back into key moments between the larger books. These shorter stories return to characters readers already know, filling in quiet emotional beats, family gatherings, and turning points in romances that were only hinted at before. They are written to be treats for readers who have already finished the trilogy and want to linger a little longer in its world.

Across the series, you can expect factory floors, shipping offices, gambling dens, grand houses, and rough bars, all painted with a lot of sensory detail. Donnelly leans into big feelings and big set pieces, mixing rags to riches plots, political intrigue, organized crime, medical drama, and sweeping love stories. The Tea Rose books are especially appealing if you like historical fiction that is generous with both romance and grit, and if you enjoy following one family through several decades of upheaval.
