Series background & context

Charleston’s historic district is the heart of the Tea Shop Mystery series. The books revolve around the Indigo Tea Shop, a snug little business tucked among antique stores and galleries, where tourists and locals come for hot tea, homemade scones, and gossip.

The shop is run by Theodosia Browning, a former marketing pro who has poured her energy into blending teas and hosting themed events. At her side are Drayton Conneley, an older Southern gentleman and tea sommelier who knows every variety by scent alone, and Haley Parker, the young pastry chef whose baking keeps regulars coming back. Theodosia’s rescue dog, Earl Grey, rounds out the family.

Each book drops this crew into some very public Charleston moment. One week they are catering a garden party at a historic home, the next they are pouring tea at a yacht race, a film festival, a ghost tour in a centuries old cemetery, or a lavish plantation fundraiser. A sudden death or shocking accident follows, and Theodosia’s curiosity pulls her into the investigation whether the police like it or not.

Because Theodosia is rooted in the community, she moves easily between high society drawing rooms, back alleys, and lowcountry marshes. She trades information with Detective Burt Tidwell, but also with innkeepers, museum staff, auctioneers, environmental activists, and old Charleston families who would never open up to an outsider. Drayton’s social connections and Haley’s ear for kitchen talk help her read between the lines.

Readers who enjoy strong sense of place will find plenty of detail here. The books linger over cobblestone streets, ironworked balconies, Gullah stories, Civil War relics, and the moods of the tidal creeks. They also lean hard into tea culture, from rare Chinese greens to fragrant herbal blends, along with the etiquette, rituals, and food pairings that go with them.

Across the series you can expect self contained mysteries, light romantic subplots, and a cast of recurring friends and foes who grow more layered over time. Most volumes end with recipes and tea time ideas drawn from the shop’s menu, so the stories double as gentle invitations to brew a pot and settle in for the next case.
