The System Apocalypse: Relentless Books in Order

The System Apocalypse: Relentless is a grittier branch of Tao Wong's universe, following Hal Mason rather than John Lee. Hal is an ex-soldier, ex-bail bondsman, and the sort of man who already knows that order is thinner than most people think. When the System arrives, Pittsburgh becomes a different kind of hunting ground, and Hal is built well enough to survive it, though not cleanly.

That last part matters.

This series leans harder into moral wear and tear. In A Fist Full of Credits, Hal is still close to the collapse, dealing with mutant wildlife, panic, violence, and the ugly math of what people will do for the next level. By Dungeon World Drifters and Apocalypse Grit, the setting has widened into frontier travel, galactic contracts, trade disputes, and alien power struggles, but the core question stays the same. How much of yourself can you spend to keep going?

Hal is a good guide for this kind of story because he is practical without being simple. He can handle violence, but that does not mean it leaves him untouched. The books use bounty work, escort jobs, and contract trouble to keep the plot moving, while the larger world keeps pressing in from the edges.

The tone is tougher and more hard-bitten than some other System books, but it still has the same Tao Wong interest in progression, consequences, and people making bad situations a little less bad through stubborn effort.

If you want the apocalypse with fewer speeches and more grit under the nails, Relentless is the branch to pick up.
