Series background & context

The Sutherlands of Dornoch Castle is Callie Hutton's medieval Highland romance series, and it leans hard into the things that make that kind of story fun: clan loyalty, arranged matches, feisty heroines, proud lairds, and a castle full of people who have opinions about everybody else's life.

Dornoch Castle is the center of it all.

The books are set in seventeenth-century Scotland, where marriage is never just personal. A bride can strengthen an alliance, calm a feud, or create a brand-new problem before the wedding feast is over. That pressure runs through the whole series. The Sutherland men may think they know what kind of wives they need, but Hutton quickly upends those neat plans. In To Deceive a Highlander, for example, a twin switch turns a practical match into a battle of wills. Other books keep playing with mistaken identity, reluctant marriage, simmering attraction, and the gap between duty and what the heart wants.

The tone is lively more than grim. There are real stakes, land, power, clan reputation, family survival, but the books also have a playful edge. Hutton likes couples who start by arguing, circling each other, or trying to outmaneuver one another. That gives the series a lot of energy. Nobody falls quietly in love here.

Family matters just as much as romance. Brothers, sisters, clan allies, and old enemies all shape the story. The castle setting helps with that because it keeps people in close quarters. Meals, visitors, accidents, family demands, and public expectations all keep pushing the hero and heroine back together, even when they would rather stomp off in opposite directions.

If you like Highland romances with strong heroines, stubborn heroes, and plots built around marriage bargains and clan politics, this series is a good fit. Start with To Deceive a Highlander and read forward. The books are connected by the Sutherland family and their world, so reading in order lets the relationships, rivalries, and shifting alliances land the way they should.
