Author bio

Callie Hutton was born in Newark, New Jersey, and she has said she was making up stories from the time she was in elementary school. Writing seems to have given those stories a place to go. Long before she built a long backlist of romance and mystery novels, she was already drawn to character, conflict, and the small human details that make a story feel lived in.

Before turning fully to fiction, she published articles and interviews in newspapers and magazines. That matters when you read her books. Even when the setup is big, a runaway bride, a murder in Bath, a Highland laird who badly needs a wife, the scenes tend to stay grounded in everyday feelings, family tension, awkward attraction, and people trying to keep their footing when life gets messy.

History was the hook.

Hutton studied history in college, and that background shows up all through her work. Her first romance novel was set on the late nineteenth-century Oregon Trail, and from there she kept moving through favorite periods and places: the American West, Regency and Victorian England, and the Scottish Highlands. Readers who like historical romance often come to her for that mix of research and readability. The setting is there, but it rarely weighs the story down.

A few books give a good sense of her range. The Elusive Wife has the playful, high-conflict Regency energy that runs through a lot of her historical romance. The Bookseller and the Earl shows her affection for outsiders and unconventional heroines. To Deceive a Highlander leans into clan politics, marriage trouble, and Highland atmosphere. Then there is A Study in Murder, which shifts from romance-first storytelling into a Victorian mystery built around Lady Amy Lovell and Lord William Wethington in Bath.

That shift stuck.

Hutton has written western romance, Regency romance, Highland romance, romantic suspense, and historical cozy mysteries. Across those books, a few patterns keep showing up. She likes strong-willed women who do not fit neatly into what their world expects. She likes men who may begin as stubborn, guarded, or overconfident, then have to learn patience. She also seems to enjoy a touch of humor, a bit of danger, and families, whether by blood or choice, that keep complicating everybody's plans.

Her mystery work brought another side of her writing into focus. The Sign of Death, the second Victorian Book Club mystery, was a finalist for the Mary Higgins Clark Award in 2022. That series keeps the historical setting she clearly loves, but lets her spend more time with clues, suspects, and the pleasures of amateur sleuthing.

She now lives in Oklahoma with her husband, and she has spoken about a busy family life that includes grown children, grandchildren, and rescue dogs. That home base feels in step with the books themselves. There is a lot of bustle in them, a lot of heart, and usually the sense that even when people are in over their heads, they are still worth rooting for.
